Perimenopause essentially means ‘around menopause’ and refers to the time during which your body makes the transition to menopause, marking the end of reproductive years. Also known as menopausal transition, women reach this stage at different ages, but you may first notice some changes in your late ‘30s and early ‘40s. The biggest sign is menstrual irregularity.

What Is The Meaning Of Perimenopause

The level of estrogen (the main female hormone) in your body rises and falls unevenly during this period. You will notice your menstrual cycle lengthening or shortening during this time, along with experiencing symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep troubles, and vaginal dryness.

Once you’ve had 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, your body has officially reached menopause, with the perimenopause period being over. However, it is always advisable to get a doctor’s opinion to ensure that your period cycle isn’t affected by any other changes in your body.

We spoke to Dr Ritu Sethi, a senior consultant-gynaecology at Cloud Nine Hospital in Gurgaon, to learn more about perimenopause, its symptoms and how to make the natural transition easier on your body.
