Fight The Self Doubt

“I had 12+ years of experience in India in HR. While I enjoyed my job, it was also extremely monotonous. I didn’t love sitting in front of a laptop for 10 hours a day. It was affecting my physical health, and I found it very stressful. When we moved to Australia, people suggested that I do a certification course in HR to pursue a career. I was not keen to study again for two years while also taking care of my two boys and managing the house. I did work at a childcare centre for six months, but I didn’t like the job. That’s when I decided to start a small business. This opportunity was born out of adversity. At 41, building a new career was a big decision. I had no experience in business, and I was also in a new country. When I had moments of self-doubt, I had to keep reminding myself that any business needs time to pick up. My husband, my in-laws, and my parents were extremely supportive of my decision. I love being my own boss because I feel very independent. I can now put creativity into my work. For other women looking to change their careers or start a business, I would say do what makes you happy. We have one life and one chance, so dance to your favourite tunes. Look for different opportunities which give you happiness and trust your inner voice. Only you know what’s best for you.”

Always Follow Your Passion

“I have been a corporate health care marketing professional, and in October 2019, I decided to make the switch and become a foodpreneur. The constant rat race of proving my potential was getting to me, and I felt highly undervalued. I used the opportunity to fulfil my passion for healthy food and created my first brand of organic spice powders, sauces and dips. This is how Neha’s Sauces2spices was born. In 2021 I launched my second brand, Neha’s Kitchenette, which caters to fresh food, party snacks and meal combos through a cloud kitchen concept. Many people in my family, including my mom, were apprehensive about this bold step; however, my then partner, now husband, was immensely supportive and helped me realise my dream. I received my first award as a woman entrepreneur on Women’s Day this year! My advice for other women who wish to change their careers is that it is never too late to start, and the important thing is to be happy and at peace with yourself. You only live once; make the most of it. Take one step at a time and believe in your work.

Remember It’s Never Too Late

“I was a stay at home mom for 17 years. I gave up my career in the advertising world when I was pregnant with my firstborn. As my kids grew and became independent, I noticed they needed me less. And then Covid happened. Life came to a standstill for everyone. It was then that I decided to look for work. A close friend knew of a real estate company that was hiring. I applied and gave a Zoom interview and was hired right away! Within a year, I went from being a weekend receptionist to a full-time office manager. It was there that my co-workers suggested I study for my real estate exam. I did. I passed and am now a certified real estate agent. I love that I work on my own terms and my own time. I am a realtor, so I am pretty much my own boss. I can choose to work every day or just some days or no days at all. To the ones who are unhappy in their current careers, it’s never too late to make the change. I did it at 49.”

It’s Tough But You Can Do It

“I started my career as a counsellor, changed some jobs in the early years of my job and slowly realised that my interest is in working as a beautician. I eventually turned my passion into a small cosmetic company and an online boutique cum store. I am happy to be my boss, as my priority has always been my family, and a flexible working career helps. It’s not been easy to start as the world is full of competition; some of my family members, friends and acquaintances even tried to discourage me. Some laughed at my ideas, and I felt demotivated, but my close friends, husband, and furry kid never left me alone. I just have one thing to say to women who wish to change their careers—never say no to your passion and always follow your heart.
