The world seems to hate older people. There I’ve said it. Between anti-ageing advertisements, beauty products that promise to make you look like you are stuck in your ’30s and the Internet’s obsession with staying young and relevant, it’s a miracle that a 40-year-old can get out of bed and stay positive!
As I inch closer to The Big 4-0 mark in my life, I struggle to find representation. Words like aunty (which I absolutely love, by the way), oldie, and boomer are used to describe me, mock me, and make me feel like I am not “cool” enough. Well, guess what? I love growing older. And so do pretty much all of us. I figured it’s time for me to shout this fact from the rooftops—or do the digital equivalent of it, announcing it on social media.
The word Midlife Crisis has always been used to mock people. It means there’s a timeline to living your life and trying new things. I want to take power away from the word and make it about loving yourself and embracing the natural process of ageing.
At The MLC, we focus on keeping things real and relevant and building a space where all the 35+ gang can express themselves, get inspired, and stop hating the process of ageing. Society has tried repeatedly to tell us that growing old is terrible and needs to be fought and hidden. Well, as a bunch of ‘old’ badass women, it’s time we tell everyone how enjoyable, self-affirming and beautiful growing older feels.
Join me as I embrace my Midlife Crisis and come along for the beautiful ride.
