Mani Punj, who works with a high-end luxury design company in Gurgaon, shares her dating journey as a single mother.

“I always believe happiness is a state of mind; likewise, I believe the same when it comes to relationships. One has to be clear with what you want in a relationship and accept the partner as they are. For me, it’s essential to be transparent about your feelings and independence to express the same to your partner. Trust, understanding, loyalty, honesty, and acceptance are my must-haves in a relationship.

Online Dating As A Single Mother

When I lost my husband in 2016, I was in shock. It took me three and a half years to come to terms with the fact he will not come back. That’s when I felt the need to give my life a second chance.  Dating again made me feel like a 16-year-old girl—giggling, feeling happy inside. I started dressing up again, wearing makeup and feeling excited to meet new people. I downloaded apps like OkCupid and Bumble, and I enjoyed my experience meeting new people. I met many men my age and some older, and it was a great experience, mainly because I started loving and taking care of myself. Thanks to online dating apps, I met my partner, whom I have been steady with for the last two and a half years.

Fighting Stigma

Mani with her partner, Vaibhav

My family, extended family, and friends are quite happy with my decision; however, my partner’s father isn’t happy about it. Vaibhav (my partner) has never been married, and he is my age. I am a widow and mother of a child, so his father isn’t happy with our relationship, whereas everyone in his family is quite supportive. It’s been a difficult journey for us. I have always been upfront with the facts of my life with him or anyone else I dated. I am really blessed that he accepted me with a full heart, as I do too.

Dating As A Single Mother

I didn’t bring any of the men I dated home unless I would be sure about them. I didn’t want to play with my daughter’s emotions. I guess that’s my only rule. I balance my time with her and my partner, to whom she is fondly attached to.

My advice to other single mothers who want to date is just going for it. Life is too short to be alone unless that’s what you want. I say it’s your life, your decision, do what makes you happy and excited. Be open and honest about who you are and what you want.”
